Sulfur is a non-metal element with an atomic number of 16. Known for its crystal structure, sulfur forms various compounds, including sulfates, integral in numerous industrial and environmental processes. Pure sulfur is a tasteless, odorless, brittle solid that is pale yellow.
Application
Sulfur is used to produce sulfuric acid and phosphates for fertilizer. It is also used to bleach paper in the pulp and paper industry and as a preservative in the food and beverage industry.
Challenges
Sulfates are found within many drinking water sources and are recommended for removal. It can cause water to taste bitter and build up in water pipes for decreased efficiency.
