Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal with an atomic number of 12. It is lightweight, strong, and the eighth most abundant element in the universe.

Applications
Magnesium is a key element in plant and animal life and is also alloyed with aluminum to produce cars and airplanes. Because of its lightweight nature, it is used to manufacture car seats, luggage, laptops, cameras and power tools.

Challenges
Magnesium produces hard water. While non-toxic to the human body, it can cause problems with household appliances such as plumbing, heaters, dishwashers, etc.

Solutions
Resin technology is used for two relevant applications.

Removal for Water Softening

Hard water comprises positively charged calcium (Ca++) and magnesium (Mg++) ions. The higher the concentration of these ions, the harder the water will be. Magnesium can be removed from hard water utilizing a strong acid cation (SAC) resin and regenerated with sodium chloride (brine).
