Arsenic is a metalloid with an atomic number of 33. When heated, arsenic does not melt; it changes directly into a vapor.
Applications
It occurs naturally in many minerals and is used to produce semiconductors (gallium arsenide), pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides.
Challenges
Arsenic can enter the drinking water supply naturally from soil runoff or man-made processes like industrial waste streams and pollution and is a serious risk to human health. In drinking water, short-term health effects are stomach pain and nausea, and long-term health effects have been linked to cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
Solutions
Resin technology is used to remove arsenic from potable and groundwater.
Purolite™ Ferrix™ A33E can remove arsenic to meet safe levels in potable and groundwater.
Purolite PFA300E is recommended if arsenic is present as an As(V) and competing anion concentrations are low. In arsenate, the arsenic atom has a valency (combining capacity with other atoms) of 5 and is known as pentavalent arsenic or As(V).
