Selenium is a non-metal element with an atomic number of 34. Selenium can be gray, black or red with a metallic sheen. 

Applications
A common byproduct of copper refining, selenium, is used within the photography industry and as an additive in the manufacturing of glass and pigments. Selenium is also used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions.

Challenges
Selenium can be considered unsafe if taken in high doses for long periods. Selenium may be present in significant concentrations (ppm levels) in aqueous effluent from sulfuric acid manufacture, coal, oil and oil shale processing and must be removed.

Solutions
Resin technology is used to remove selenium from potable groundwater.

Removal from Potable Groundwater

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) and the Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) for selenium in drinking water at 0.05 mg/L, and the World Health Organization (WHO) provisional guideline for potable water is 40 ppb (0.04 mg/l).

Like sulfur, which is present in surface and groundwaters as sulfates (SO₄) and sulfites (SO₃), selenium is present as selenates (SeO₄) and selenites (SeO₃). These oxyanions are well selected for on a strong base anion exchanger such as Purolite™ A300E and Purolite™ A600E/9149.
