Selenium is a non-metal element with an atomic number of 34. Selenium can be gray, black or red with a metallic sheen.
Applications
A common byproduct of copper refining, selenium, is used within the photography industry and as an additive in the manufacturing of glass and pigments. Selenium is also used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions.
Challenges
Selenium can be considered unsafe if taken in high doses for long periods. Selenium may be present in significant concentrations (ppm levels) in aqueous effluent from sulfuric acid manufacture, coal, oil and oil shale processing and must be removed.
Solutions
