Return to Table

Carbon is a non-metal element with an atomic number of 6. Carbon is the 15th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and is the 4th most abundant element in the universe. It has several pure forms, including graphite, diamond, fullerenes, and graphene and  is thefundamental component of organic compounds.

Applications
Carbon is versatile, with various applications in the iron, steel, commercial, and aerospace industries. Common carbon uses are coal, fuel, graphite for pencils, and diamonds.

Challenges
Organic carbon is a byproduct of wastewater treatment plants releasing sewage into groundwater and is measured by total organic carbon (TOC). This can have a detrimental effect on the production of pure water. High levels of TOC lead to dibutyl phthalate (DBPs), which causes bladder cancer and possible reproductive problems.

Additionally, carbon dioxide poses a challenge for the environment.  The rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, most notably CO₂, has been linked to observable changes in global climate conditions.

Solutions
Resin technology for organics removal and carbon dioxide (CO₂) removal.

Removal from Potable and Groundwater

Ecolab offers a range of strong base anion exchange resins to remove dissolved organics. They vary by styrene and acrylic matrix and porosity. The optimum resin is dependent on the characteristics of the specific application.

Purolite™ A502P is a high-quality macroporous weak base anion exchange resin that removes organic compounds and color bodies from potable and groundwater sources, ensuring enhanced water purity and taste. Purolite A860 is a superior quality, highly regenerated, gel-type strong base anion exchange resin suitable for the selective removal of organic and inorganic anionic contaminants, thereby contributing to the purification and improvement of potable and groundwater quality.

Removal of Carbon Dioxide

Advancements in carbon capture technology now include methods to capture CO₂ directly from the air. This process, known as direct air capture (DAC), uses chemical reactions to extract CO₂ from the ambient air. The captured CO₂ can then be stored or utilized in various ways, such as in the production of synthetic fuels or building materials. DAC technology holds great promise for reducing atmospheric CO₂ levels and combating climate change.

Resin technology, including Purolite A110 and Purolite A500OHPlus, removes carbon from potable and groundwater. These resins are effective in capturing and removing carbon contaminants, ensuring cleaner water sources and contributing to environmental sustainability.
