More than 30% of the energy consumed in the United States is used for vehicle transportation. Diversifying energy supply and using renewable fuel sources is becoming more critical with every passing year. Biodiesel is obtained by processing animal and plant oils and fat, which is one solution for sustainable fuel sources. Billions of liters are produced annually worldwide.
However, the process can demand large quantities of chemicals, which compromise the quality of the biodiesel with impurities and generate high amounts of effluent. Depending on the level of impurities, biodiesel can become improper for some applications.
Purolite CT175 and Purolite A503MBOH can replace the chemical catalysts in the esterification and transesterification steps, respectively. They will avoid adding more impurities while also eliminating the need for yet more chemicals for pH neutralization. Not just that, but the resins can be reused for many cycles, which makes them a much more environmentally friendly and cost reduction option.
Also, it is possible to remove most of the impurities, such as water, glycerin, methanol, catalysts and inorganic salts through ion exchange and adsorption, with the resin Purolite PD206. The produced biodiesel will acquire a much more limpid aspect.
