Bismuth is a chemical element with an atomic number of 83. This non-toxic metal is extremely brittle and is often combined with other metals.
Applications
Frequently used in the production of cosmetics and paints, bismuth is used as a yellow pigment.
Challenges
Bismuth can be found as an impurity in industrial water streams and must be removed. Bismuth in copper electrolyte solution causes an uneven surface of the metal.
Solutions
Resin technology removes bismuth as an impurity in copper electrolyte purification.
Electrowinning is a process used to extract metal ions from their ores after mining them from the earth. Impurities must be removed from these copper electrolyte streams to ensure the quality and value of the copper ions.
Ion exchange resins can selectively remove bismuth from copper electrolyte streams. An amino phosphonic type chelating resin is recommended. Ecolab provides two products that effectively remove bismuth from copper electrolyte solutions: Purolite™ Puromet™ MTS9500 and Purolite Puromet MTS9510PF.
