Our always-ready technical support and service teams go the extra step to be your most trusted resource. We're here for you.
Green Hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis powered by clean energy sources. This electrolysis process requires ultrapure water (UPW) for maintaining high operating efficiency. High-quality ion exchange resin is vital to achieving and maintaining these stringent feedwater requirements, enabling efficient production.
Our UltraClean™ resins are produced to achieve the highest grade of UPW with the lowest levels of organic extractables from the resins. Their quick rinse-in times can help to reduce downtime and wastewater volumes.
The UltraClean Advantage
Extended Electrolyzer Life - Ion exchange resins extend the service life of the electrolyzer by shielding it from contaminants and corrosion by-products released during operation. This minimizes downtime due to maintenance.
Optimized Hydrogen Production - Ultrapure water translates to smooth electrolyzer operation, maximizing green hydrogen yield and production efficiency.
Reduced Operational Costs - Our high-capacity resins deliver exceptional contaminant removal with minimal wastewater, lowering overall operating costs. Maintaining the highest-quality water extends the life of the electrolyzer components, reducing downtime and replacement costs.
Resins Customized for Peak Performance in Every Electrolysis System
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (PEM)
PEM electrolyzer systems require careful management of feed water quality to the stack for optimal performance. PEM electrolysis prioritizes achieving ultrapure water with exceptionally low conductivity and minimal contamination. Control measures include:
Maintaining UPW quality of PEM loop at > 18 MΩ-cm (< 0.056 µScm)
Removing dissolved ionic impurities such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, silica, and trace levels of system metals
Removing fluoride released from the PEM to the return loop; this can otherwise result in corrosion of piping or be present as PFAS in the waste stream
Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (AEM)
AEM requires low conductivity, with more emphasis on ensuring membrane effectiveness. Although the process can tolerate higher conductivity and alkalinity than PEM, maintaining low levels of inorganic and organic contaminants such as silica, iron, calcium, magnesium, and TOC are essential to prevent the degradation of the electrodes.
Alkaline Electrolysis (AEL)
AEL uses high-quality aqueous electrolytes, typically NaOH or KOH, in concentrations > 25%. High-quality deionized water is required to make this solution, as high conductivity and high TOC can lead to unwanted side reactions within the electrolyte solution, reducing hydrogen production efficiency and potentially damaging the electrodes. Purolite resins remove total dissolved solids (TDS), including calcium, magnesium, sodium, and chloride.
Purolite UltraClean Products for Clean Hydrogen
Our Ultraclean ion exchange resins are specially produced to achieve the highest level of purity and cleanliness, resulting in quick rinse-in times to achieve effluent water quality of > 18 MΩ-cm quality and < 1 ppb TOC.
