Ion exchange resins remove organic and inorganic compounds from gelatin, improving the color, taste and odor of the foods, medicines, supplements, desserts and treats we enjoy. Gelatin is a protein-based substance derived from bones, skin and other tissues of animals such as cows, pigs, chickens and other animals. Gelatin and collagen are made from the by-products of the meat and leather. Both gelatin and collagen contain many amino acids such as glycine, glutamic acid, proline, alanine, arginine and hydroxyproline, hydroxylysine and other essential amino acids.

Global producers of gelatin and hydrolyzed collagen needed help to maximize taste and odor compound removal from their final hydrolyzed collagen products. After they exhausted other types of adsorbents, including activated carbon and other synthetic adsorbents, they looked to ion resin exchange to solve this issue. They are also interested in increasing the purity of the final product.

The gelatin and collagen industries found success with adsorbent products based on their porosity and hydrophobicity characteristics—to remove the undesirable tastes and odors. And, after using Purolite Macronet™ MN102 not only were their goals met, the results far surpassed any other solution.
