Hydrometallurgy

Purolite has supplied ion exchange and chelating resins to the hydrometallurgy industry for over 30 years. Such experience ensures that we understand our clients’ needs and have allowed us to custom configure our products to target specific elements of interest.

Advanced ion exchange technology is used for the primary recovery of metal or the removal of impurities to increase the value and purity of the final product. Metals can be extracted from ores using several methods including hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy or physical means and their combinations. Hydrometallurgy is the process of extracting metals from ores by transferring the metal of interest from the ore into an aqueous phase and recovering the metal from the resulting pregnant liquor.

Often, various hydrometallurgical processes are used in the same flowsheet, such as combining ion exchange and solvent extraction for the recovery and purification of precious metals. Hydrometallurgical processes can also be combined with non-hydrometallurgical extractive metallurgy processes.

Applications of ion exchange in hydrometallurgy include gold recovery, uranium recovery, molybdenum recovery, impurity removal and effluent treatment to ensure adherence to environmental standards to allow recycling and re-use.

In regards to uranium acidic liquors and pulp applications, all anion resins can be supplied in Cl or SO4 form.
