Cane sugar refiners producing liquid or crystal sugar products continue to switch from powdered carbon or granular carbon to ion exchange resins for decolorization to reduce operating costs and improve process hygiene.

Cane sugar refining is a color-controlled process and how the color source is from the cane sugar stalk and the cane sugar extraction/refining process. Ion exchange resins remove color by exchange and adsorption and why it is the lowest cost method with the cleanest way for reducing sugar color. Ion exchange resins used in the sugar industry as decolorizers are of the strong-base anion type, with Type I quaternary amine functional groups, operated in the chloride form.
