Purolite mourns the loss of a great employee, mentor and friend.

Bala Cynwyd, PA, USA – October 19, 2016

We are saddened to report that Bill Fries peacefully passed away on October 19.

Bill was a pioneer in the advanced ion exchange resin technology industry, being involved for almost 60 years.  He was instrumental in developing products for decoloring sugar cane, transition metal and boron removal as well as many other technology improvements in ion exchange.

Looking to further expand the knowledge of ion exchange, Bill came to Purolite in 1993.  For the next 22 years he was the Technical Manager at the Philadelphia plant.  In the late 1990s Bill developed the unique Shallow Shell Technology line of strong acid cation resins. He continued to promote expansion of this concept to the weak acid and strong base resins which have been successfully commercialized. Purolite has benefited by many other ideas or applications championed by Bill.

Bill was always eager to share his expertise and knowledge with anyone who asked and trained many people in the Purolite organization. Just about everyone in the Purolite family have utilized his extensive knowledge at one time or another.

For the last sixteen months Bill continued to provide insights and support as a Technical Fellow working from his home.

He will be greatly missed by all in Purolite, especially those who had the privilege of working with him.
