A large chemical facility in Western Canada utilizes high pressure steam and has a water treatment facility with a demineralization system utilizing a competing standard gel Type II strong base anion resin. The boiler feedwater quality required low silica limits (< 20 ppb) and the water treatment facility was suffering from short anion run lengths due to very high organics in the river make-up source.
The organic fouling in the strong base anions was so severe that the client needed to perform annual brine squeeze procedures to recover strong base regeneration efficiency. Even with annual brine squeezes, the client was looking to replace the strong base anion resin after just four years of service.
Purolite quoted both a replacement anion resin as well as highlighted the benefits of switching to Purofine® PFA870. The value-added PFA870 is a combination of weak base and strong base functionality which allows for excellent organics removal without fouling. Several Canadian facilities with high organics in the make-up source have switched to PFA870 and references were provided to the client.
Six months after installation of the PFA870, the client observed the silica limits were not compromised with the new resin. Furthermore, the run lengths of the anions increased by up to 50%. Two years after installation of the PFA870, the client had still not performed a brine squeeze to recover strong base anion efficiency.
