Biocatalysis Resin Applications in Pharmaceutical Production
In the pharmaceutical industry, immobilized enzymes are used in a wide range of biocatalysis applications. They provide significant advantages to industrial manufacturing processes for high value molecules. Our range of Lifetech ECR (enzyme carrier resin) resins for enzyme immobilization can help you with your large-scale biocatalysis applications due to their high enzyme activity, resin robustness, cost-efficiency and full regulatory support.
Lifetech™ Enzyme Immobilization Resins
Lifetech ECR enzyme immobilization resins provide physical, chemical and mechanical stability with minimal swelling in aqueous solutions or organic solvents. The matrix can be methacrylic or styrenic, providing the optimal degree of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity depending on your specific application. They are available in standard 150 - 300 μm and 300 - 710 μm particle size ranges. For use in food and beverage applications, they are also available in 300 - 1200 μm sizes.
High cross-linking ensures mechanical stability, and high functional group density allows intense multipoint covalent binding and consequently minimal enzyme leakage.
Lifetech resins are available in three grades:
- F Grade: 150 - 300 micron
- M Grade: 300 - 710 micron
- Industrial Grade: 300 - 1200 micron
Ready-to-use immobilized enzymes
Immobilized enzymes are commonly used in manufacturing processes for pharmaceutical products due to their effectiveness in both batch and continuous processes. Our Lifetech immobilized enzymes can be supplied at high volumes (ton-scales) and utilize highly robust resins, allowing you to achieve longer resin lifetime, higher productivities and cost-efficiencies during operation.
Typical applications in the pharmaceutical industry are:
- Immobilized Penicillin G Amidase
- Penicillin Manufacture
- Sitagliptin (Merck anti-diabetes)
- Medical devices - removal of Urea from dialysate and enteral nutrition
We offer a variety of services to aid you in improving your process and hands-on support with:

Immobilized Penicillin G Amidase
The most commonly used immobilized enzyme in the pharmaceutical industry is immobilized penicillin G amidase. The main product that this immobilized enzyme produces is Amoxicillin (Augmentin).
Due to the microbial resistance, a challenge has arose because new beta lactam antibiotcis needs to be discovered yearly to be effective.
Currently, the production of beta lactam anitbiotics is done using one of two penicillin G acylases. One is designed for the hydrolysis of benzylpenicillin and the other for the synthesis of semi-synthetic beta lactams.
Immobilized CalB which has been immobilized by adsorption on a hydrophobic carrier is ideal for applications in water, such as, Sofosbuvir.
Sofosbuvir is an anti-hepatitis C API, as it is classed as a pandemic disease, there is continued trend on finding treatments. It is a large molecule which has a synthesis that requires many chemical steps, immobilized CalB is used in the process for enantioselective hydrolysis of an acetate ester into chiral alcohol.
