PUROLITE'S FALL 2019 CORNHOLE CHAMPIONS HAVE BEEN CROWNED

On October 18, two-person team finalists from the Bala Cynwyd USA headquarters office and the G-Street production facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA faced-off for Purolite’s 4th Bi-annual Cornhole Tournament Championship. After qualification matches by 19 teams, we were down to the final two – one team representing each location. Anticipation leading up to the event was high as the Bala office fought to reclaim the trophy, and the plant fought to keep it. Bala Cynwyd’s Bytes of Corn team (Juan Bazurto and Michael Rivera) visited G-Street to face off against Beauty and the Beast (Ray Mattson and Joe Bojko). Adding to the excitement was that the event was live-streamed on Purolite’s Instagram feed for the first time.

Qualifying matches for the fall tournament began September 23. In the weeks leading up to the final tournament, the Bala Cynwyd and G-Street locations each held their own internal matches to determine who would represent their respective site in the finals. Seasoned players who had participated in the event previously helped share techniques with their co-workers who had less cornhole experience.

The six teams participating from headquarters were: Oldies and Newbies (Alicia Topp and Doree Jacobs), In Yo’ Face! (Jason Hsu and Victoria Ortiz), Corn Huskers (Ben Docktor and Jason Jay), The Peppercorns (Linda Heiser and Rebecca Keyser), Bytes of Corn (Juan Bazuro and Michael Rivera) and The Super Heroes (Jason Copin and Hilary Valentine).

“It’s fun to get the two locations together and have fun. Our office [Bala Cynwyd] had a couple more teams sign up this tournament and we would like to have more in the future” said Doree Jacobs, Purchasing Assistant. “It’s a great way to get to know people…and a fun way to relieve stress.”

The 13 teams from G-Street participating were: The Rick and Scott Show (Rick Hinkson and Scott Pfefferle), Team X-Box (Angel Melendez and Steve Pena), Beauty and the Beast (Ray Mattson and Joe Bojko), Dunkin (Brandon Dunkin and Wayne Dunkin), Stone Cold Steve Tossin (Steve Moylan and Mike Garnity), Dark Memes (Josh Antonacci and Scott Haldeman), Human Beans (Alexis Sherman, Sean Seager), Old Heads (Hieu Pham and Samuel Shands), Nuts and Bolts (Hector Gonzales and Tony Starkus), FYA (Felix Rivera and Antonio Delgado), 2 Corny Guys (Steve West and Mike Zagrocki), Ren and Stimpy (Jamie Vasquez and Joe Sullivan) and Pirates of the Caribbean (Carlos Soccoro and Warner Jarnagin).

Some employees from the Bala office traveled to G-Street to cheer on their team. At noon, employees filled the parking lot, readying the cornhole board and bean bags, and claiming the best seats on the sidelines to watch the match. The Dos Hermanos Taco food truck was on hand, organized by Anna Luna, Human Resource Generalist, to serve crunchy tacos, chips with creamy guacamole, and oversized burritos to the events spectators.

Doree Jacobs arranged for similar-themed lunch from Chipotle for employees at the Bala office who could not make it to G-Street to see the match live. Several employees watched the spectacle upfold on their mobile devices via the live stream on Instagram courtesy of Shainie Brodie, Marketing Assistant.

As the 13-round match commenced, the crowd held their breath rooting for their respective teams. In the end, Beauty and the Beast were victorious by a score of 18-9. “Cream always rises to the top,” noted winner Joe Bojko, Production Control Supervisor. “[It] was a tough match – been trying to win for years...finally, it happened.”

Purolite would like to thank everyone who participated in the fall 2019 Cornhole Tournament. A special thank you to Anna Luna and Alexis Sherman, who planned the tournaments for both locations and ensured that the matches ran smoothly.

Congratulations to Beauty and the Beast (Joe Bojko and Ray Mattson), who battled hard and succeeded at keeping the trophy at the G-Street plant, and securing another season of Cornhole supremacy. Stay tuned in 2020 as Purolite will host its 5th bi-annual tournament!
