The 79th annual International Water Conference (IWC) was held at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona this year from November 3 – 8. As a Gold Sponsor, Purolite products and services were highlighted at the show. Purolite attendees included Don Downey (Canadian Sales Manager), Fred Morita (Southwest USA Technical Sales Manager), Howard Davis (Southwest USA Sales Manager) and Andrea Bartus (Marketing Manager).

Over 100 exhibitors were on hand and 1,000 attendees came out to learn about water treatment solutions.

Setting up the booth on Sunday, Don Downey was proud to see the Purolite logo on all show lanyards—and therefore on each attendee. As additional sponsor support, we had one full page color advertisement in the Conference Program Guide, as well as a half-page black-and-white ad, both featuring PFAS removal using resin. A post card on PFAS was also included in each person’s show kit.

Opening night was busy with many visitors to the booth, and many questions about PFAS removal for both municipal and industrial applications. Our double booth space was able to accommodate many visitors who stopped by due to its strategic location on the show floor.

The next day was the official opening of the conference, and featured sessions on cooling water chemistry, delivering success in water projects, boiler water contaminants, sustainable water treatment design, trace contaminants and many others. An additional highlight was a keynote session presented by Joel Beauvais.

In the evening, Purolite hosted a hospitality suite for customers and potential customers that featured giant “Connect Four” and “Battleship” games, as well as seafood and Mediterranean food bars. It was a great time for mixing with industry experts and learning more about different sectors of industrial water treatment.

New this year was an outdoor exhibition, featuring mobile trailer treatment systems from MPW Industrial services, Pall Water, Suez and WesTech Engineering. The weather was warm, but exhibition employees were very helpful with answering questions to people venturing into the outdoor exhibit zone.

Purolite posted many images and advertisements on the show’s social feed for PFAS, condensate polishing, produced water that attracted additional traffic to the booth.

Tuesday’s conference sessions included information on combined cycle plants, innovative water treatment techniques, FGD blowdown, industrial cogeneration plants, produced water management and more. The weather was warmer, but exhibition hall traffic remained strong through the day. Tuesday night was the close of the exhibition space and featured the prize winners for the bingo game and other show giveaways. Directly following breakdown, Purolite hosted a second hospitality suite featuring a carving station and salsa bar. Additionally, a magician wowed a full house of attendees with sleight of hand tricks. As a special treat, Jim Burrows played renditions of Old English Tavern Songs and Flamenco music on his guitar.

Wednesday, the conference was abuzz once again with sessions on cooling water, power plant water management, optimization of wastewater treatment systems and more. In the exhibition hall, several guests commented about Purolite’s hospitality suites with statements like, “Amazing!” “Wonderful,” “Fun” and “Awesome networking.”

In the afternoon Purolite’s Don Downey presented a training workshop on “Troubleshooting an Ion Exchange Mixed Bed” that was well attended. Attendees were highly engaged taking notes, asking questions and sharing industry expertise. Industry leaders and novices alike learned a lot as Don and Larry Broussard from Athlon both shared their experiences—including some very humorous do’s and don’ts.

Workshops continued into Thursday evening, and fewer IWC name badges were seen around the conference area and resort.

We look forward to next year when the show returns to Orlando, Florida for the 80th year of the conference.
