Purolite Corporation Introduces Purofine® PFA694E for the Removal of PFC Contamination in Drinking Water

Bala Cynwyd, PA, USA – August 23, 2016

Purolite announced today that it will immediately begin selling Purofine® PFA694E resin for selective removal of both short- and long-chain perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) from potable water, particularly PFOA, PFOS, PFBA and PFBS. The resin has an optimized functional group with enhanced ionic and adsorptive properties to enable maximum uptake of PFCs and consistently reduce levels of treated water to zero detect.

Purolite began product research & development for Purofine® PFA694E in 2009, and since then has collaborated with universities in both the United States and Europe to prove the effectiveness of the technology in extensive laboratory and pilot trials.

“Improved levels of detection are enabling researchers to make the link between trace contaminants in our public water supplies and our health,” stated Francis Boodoo, Director of Applied Technologies at Purolite. “Even though the US EPA has issued a combined lifetime Health Advisory level of 70 ppt for PFOS and PFOA, consumers are pushing for maximum removal, even for compounds that are not regulated. This latest technology allows municipal plants to consistently reduce PFC levels to non-detect while maximizing operating capacity.”

Studies suggest that PFCs are linked to human illnesses. The chemicals were commonly used in products such as firefighting foam and as industrial coatings, and are found in ground, surface and drinking water across the globe. Some level of PFC contamination has been found in 60% of the United States. Because they remain classified as “emerging,” the contaminants are unregulated in most states and countries.
