PUROLITE REMOVES 1,2 DICHLOROETHANE FROM ION EXCHANGE RESIN PRODUCTION

All ion exchange resins produced in Victoria, Romania are now solvent free

Bala Cynwyd, PA, USA — December 11, 2017 —  Purolite announced today that 1,2 dichloroethane (also known as ethylene dichloride or EDC) has been removed from all ion exchange resin production processes at our manufacturing facility in Victoria, Romania. This change, finalized at the end of November 2017, is necessary to meet current European regulatory requirements.

Purolite removed EDC from all ion exchange production in the Philadelphia, USA facility in 2002. We plan to remove EDC from cation and anion exchange resin production in our Zhejiang, China location by the end of 2018.

Resins manufactured under the new process have been fully tested and validated. The removal of EDC within production processes does not cause changes in resin performance for any known applications.

“Rather than request waivers for important regulations governing EDC, Purolite is leading the industry in the elimination of regulated solvents in ion exchange resins,” notes Satish Bapat, Global Operations Manager at Purolite. “With comprehensive experience gained through extensive R&D and testing in various applications, we are confident that the only effects the removal of EDC will have are that our resin production has less environmental impact and creates a safer working environment for our employees.”

Ethylene dichloride is a chlorinated, clear, liquid organic substance commonly used as a solvent in the production of resins. EDC is a regulated chemical by the U.S. EPA and the World Health Organization, and is registered under the European REACH Regulation EC/1907/2006. It is also a priority substance under the European Water Framework Directive.
