New European regulation on chemicals entitled REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) came into force December 2008.
REACH requires all substances imported into or manufactured in Europe to be registered.
COMPLIANCE WITH REACH REGULATION
Purolite is fully aware and committed to REACH and wishes to ensure all parties concerned that the necessary steps have been taken to fully comply with this new European Regulation.
Classification of Ion Exchange Resins and Synthetic Adsorbents
Under REACH, ion exchange resins and polymeric adsorbents are considered “polymers” (ref. Title I, Article 3.5) and “polymers” are exempt from Title II - Registration and Title VI - Evaluation (ref. Title I, Article 2.9). However, monomers and reactants used in their manufacture are subject to registration.
Registration of Monomers and Reactants for Purolite Ion Exchange Resins Manufactured in Europe
All monomers and reactants used in the manufacture of Purolite ion exchange resins and adsorbents are purchased only from REACH compliant suppliers. This means that all monomers and reactants have been pre-registered prior to the closure date of December 1st, 2008 by our suppliers, and they will be registered by the same actors by the relevant deadlines.
As a further level of assurance, Purolite has also pre-registered all raw materials and manufacturing aids used in its European manufacturing operations.
Registration of Monomers and Reactants for Purolite Ion Exchange Resins Imported into Europe
Purolite International Ltd., Llantrisant, U.K, has been formally appointed the “Only Representative” regarding the application and the implementation of REACH for all Purolite products imported into the European Union. In doing so, Purolite International Ltd., undertakes the legal responsibility to ensure that all the REACH obligations for these imported products are fulfilled on behalf of all Purolite European operations.
Purolite International Ltd., acting as the O.R., successfully pre-registered all REACH relevant substances (monomers and reactants over 2% w/w) in the imported polymers and ensures that the same substances will be registered by the relevant deadlines.
Substances of Very High Concern
Purolite guarantees that its ion exchange resins and synthetic adsorbents don’t contain any of the substances included in the last issue of the Candidate List of the Substances of Very High Concern (ref. Title IV, Article 33, Annex XIV).
