Uranium Removal

Uranium is a naturally occuring radionuclide found in both surface and groundwaters, and is a known human carcinogen.

Hydogen form Purolite® Strong Acid Cation (SAC) resins can remove 93-97% of Uranium at an effluent pH of 3.5.
At pH 7, Sodium form Purolite SAC resins can remove approximately 85% of Uranium.
At pH 4.0 to 5.6, Sodium form Purolite SAC resins remove approximately 70%.
At pH 8.2 or greater no Uranium removal is expected with Sodium form Purolite SAC resins.

For potable water applications, uranium usually exists as an anionic  uranyl complex.
Both Type 1 and Type 2 Purolite SBA resins have a strong affinity for Uranium complexes.

  • Typical Purolite® SBA resins for this application are:
    A300E
    A400E
    A600E

Purolite SBA resins used in this application are typically regenerated with brine . The recommended dosage for regeneration is a minimum of 10 lbs of salt per cubic foot of resin, at a 10% concentration,  and at least one regeneration each month.

One-time use and disposal in accordance with prevailing regulations may be feasible in certain circumstances.

Capacities can typically be quite high - ranging from  50,000  to as much as 250,000 bed volumes (375,000 to 1,875,000 gallons per cubic foot of resin) depending on the specific water quality.
Competing ions such as sulfate and chloride have a major impact on actual capacities that can be realized.
